What is a resource recovery centre?

Did you know?

Resource recovery centres used to be known as 'transfer stations'. They’re also known as ‘the tip’ or ‘the rubbish dump’.

Resource recovery centres have recycling and waste facilities to help you recycle and reduce the amount of household waste ending up in landfill.

Council's 4 resource recovery centres collect waste that residents can’t put in their household bin because of the volume, quantity or nature of the items. This incudes bulky, recyclable and hazardous waste.

Disposal options and fees

  • Landfills are different to resource recovery centres.
  • Most recyclable and reusable items can be disposed of for free.
  • There are fees to dispose of general and green waste. You can use waste vouchers to cover part or all of this cost.

Locations and opening hours

There are 4 resource recovery centres in Brisbane, located in Chandler, Ferny Grove, Nudgee and Willawong.

The centres are open every day of the year, including Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Solar panel recycling trial

We are partnering with the Smart Energy Council to launch Australia’s first solar panel recycling pilot. This initiative marks the first step towards finding a sustainable solution for managing solar panel waste by collecting, reusing and recycling solar panels to prevent them ending up in landfill.

You can book a free home collection by completing the online booking form.

The pilot will test the feasibility of collecting and recycling solar panel waste to help inform a statewide solution.

Once solar panels are collected, they are sent to a recycling facility and dismantled into their individual components, such as glass, metals and other materials. The separated materials are then repurposed to create new products.

Prepare your waste

Learn how to efficiently pack your load before visiting a resource recovery centre.

When visiting your local resource recovery centre, it’s important to plan your trip before you arrive.

Sorting your load by grouping similar items together can save you time, money, and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Pack your general waste items first, towards the front of your vehicle or trailer.

Next, pack your green waste items, such as palm fronds and garden clippings.

Group hazardous waste items, such as paint and oil.

Split up your e-waste, batteries and hard plastic items.

Flatten cardboard boxes and separate metals.

Finally, pack your Treasure Trove donations last, as this will be your first stop at the centre.

Make sure to cover and secure your load and bring a mate along to help unload heavy items.

Remember to wear enclosed shoes and protective clothing, such as gloves and glasses, to the resource recovery centres.

When you arrive, you’ll be directed by the gatehouse staff to the various drop-off points. Children under 12 and family pets must remain in your vehicles at all times.
