About driveway permits
You need a permit to build, repair or modify a residential or commercial driveway.
Residential driveways provide vehicle access for a single detached house.
Commercial driveways provide vehicle access for premises other than single detached houses, including:
- townhouses
- high-rise apartments
- shopping centres
- business centres
- industrial units.
Before issuing a permit, we will assess your proposal against the relevant requirements and guidelines, including Council's technical standards.
How to apply for a permit
You can apply for a residential or commercial driveway permit online.
Understand what documents, images and information you must provide with your application.
Additional approvals for driveway projects
Your driveway project may involve work carried out or approved by Council or other organisations.
If you submit a driveway permit application, you may need other approvals from Council that incur an additional fee.
You need Council permission to:
- temporarily close a road
- place materials on the footway or verge
- connect to stormwater drainage
- incorporate a stormwater maintenance hole into your driveway
- relocate a stormwater pit.
You must ask Council to carry out the following activities on your behalf:
- relocate a parking meter or traffic sign
- change pavement markings
- prune a street tree or its roots
- relocate a bus stop.
If your building works impact a footway, you need to apply for approval to work on Council property.
Note: The footway, also known as the 'nature strip' or 'road verge', extends from the front property boundary to the kerb. It may include a constructed footpath.

- relocate your water meter
- relocate a sewerage maintenance hole
- incorporate a sewerage maintenance hole into your driveway.
If there’s a Telstra pit or manhole in your proposed driveway site, phone Telstra on 1800 810 443.
If your property is next to a state-controlled road, you need permission from the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) for:
- access approval
- temporary lane closures
- traffic management permits.
Visit QLD Traffic to check the ownership of a road.
Visit the TMR website for information about closing a state road.
Once you have approval from Council or TMR to close a road, you also need a permit from the Queensland Police Service.
