Get money back on your composting and food waste recycling equipment with our Compost Rebate program.

What is the Compost Rebate program?
Council’s Compost Rebate program makes it more affordable to get started on composting and food waste recycling at home.
The program provides 2 types of rebates to eligible residents.
Composting equipment
Up to $100
For the purchase of eligible composting equipment made on or from 1 January 2024 for those joining the program for the first time.
One rebate per household.
Food waste recycling equipment
Up to $200
For the purchase of a food waste dehydrator system or in-sink food disposal system made on or from 1 January 2024.
One rebate per household.
Eligible residents
To be eligible for the Compost Rebate program, you must:
- be a Brisbane resident
- live at the residential address provided on the online form
- be 18 years or older, or have the consent of a parent or guardian
- not have previously received the same type of rebate (composting equipment or food waste recycling equipment rebate) through the Compost Rebate program.
Eligible items
Eligible composting equipment includes:

compost bin or tumbler

compost aerator or drill
-
worm farm or tower
-
in-ground composter or worm farm

Bokashi composting system

compost monitoring device (e.g. temperature probe, compost sensor)
-
pet waste composting system.
Eligible food waste recycling equipment includes:

food waste dehydrator system
-
in-sink food disposal system.
The rebate does not cover the cost of:
-
live worms
-
carbon material
-
worm farm conditioner
-
bokashi grains or liquid spray
-
compost accelerator liquid
-
compost blocks
-
garden tools
-
food waste dehydrator filters and accessories
-
consumable food dehydrators
-
installation for in-sink food disposal systems.

Purchase your eligible equipment from any in-store or online retailer. Second-hand distributors or items are not eligible for rebates.
Consider supporting a local business (e.g. local nursery) when purchasing your equipment.
Keep a copy of your receipt as proof of purchase.
Complete the online form to submit your rebate request.
You need to include:
- a copy of your receipt of purchase showing the description of the item, cost, supplier, date and ABN
- your property address
- your bank account details for the rebate.
If your submission is accepted, you’ll receive your rebate within 30 days. The rebate will be paid via direct deposit into your nominated bank account.

Frequently asked questions
No. Second-hand composting or food waste recycling equipment of any type is not eligible for the rebates.
No. Only one composting equipment rebate and one food waste recycling equipment rebate are permitted per household. The rebates are linked to your property’s address and not individual residents.
No. You must live at the home to claim the rebate. You can be a tenant or owner. Landlords are not eligible to claim a rebate for rental properties.
No. The composting equipment rebate is limited to one composting system per household. You cannot make multiple claims for a rebate.
No. The rebates of $100 and $200 are for the purchase of eligible composting equipment and eligible food waste recycling equipment on or after 1 January 2024 only. If you purchased eligible composting equipment between 1 July 2020 and 31 December 2023, you can submit a claim of up to $70 rebate.
You can purchase your compost bin, worm farm, bokashi or similar composting system online, however postage costs and accessories, such as live worms, are not eligible as part of your rebate claim.

No. The rebate is limited to one composting system per household. You cannot make multiple claims for a rebate.
No. Applications for the rebate can only be submitted online. Consider asking your family and friends if you need computer or internet access, or use the free computer facilities at Council libraries.
