Brisbane’s nighttime economy

Link copied

Council is committed to growing Brisbane's nighttime economy. Find out what we're doing.

From music venues to theatres, recreation to retail, our nighttime economy supports thousands of jobs and generates millions of dollars in revenue each year.

Council supports the growth of Brisbane’s nighttime economy by delivering initiatives and promoting all that the city and suburbs have to offer after dark.

We want to encourage residents and visitors to discover hidden gems in our neighbourhoods and uncover local lifestyle businesses, places and experiences.

Council works to:

  • better understand community trends, needs and motivations for nighttime activities, events and experiences

  • understand challenges for business and partnership opportunities that could strengthen the nighttime economy

  • identify opportunities that Council can consider facilitating, providing, partnering, funding, regulating and advocating toward a vibrant, diverse and sustainable nighttime economy.

Supporting our nighttime economy

Council supports the growth of Brisbane's nighttime economy through numerous initiatives and activities.

Promotion

Nighttime events and activities, such as Brisbane Greeters' twilight tours, are promoted through the What’s On in Brisbane calendar and Brisbane app.

Creative lighting

Creative lighting and the installation of bud lighting in street trees in business areas creates attractive nighttime streetscapes.

Safety initiatives

Ongoing safety initiatives include Public Space Liaison Officers, safety audits and the CitySafe camera network.

Reduced permit fees

Removing or reducing permit fees for events and festivals encourages free and affordable fun through the streamlined Events Local Law 2022.

More to explore

The MoreTix initiative prompts ticket purchasers to explore additional events, accommodation, dining and unique experiences around the time of their visit.

Festival funding

Local organisations and communities can activate public spaces through grant and festival funding. Use the Brisbane City Council Funding Finder.

Activation sponsorship

Suburban retail precincts can apply for precinct promotion and activation sponsorship to deliver events that support the nighttime economy.

Help with events

Council works with the music industry to deliver events, such as Valley Fiesta and BigSound.

Discounted parking

Evening discount parking rates are available at Council car parks in King George Square and Wickham Terrace.
